Nicole Meyer got a great write-up in Fast Co. Design today about her amazing design project Branding 10,000 Lakes.
Every time I visit that site (pretty much daily at this point), I wish not only that I had her chops—especially with type and identity—but also that I had that kind of discipline, or even just such a simple, enduring, satisfying project with which to hone my craft. Even within Meyer’s few months’ work—on what could end up a 27 year project—you can already see changes in her skill and creativity and approach.
Certainly a project that’s had me thinking. And of I course I love its Minnesotanness.

Minnesota County Map
Here it is! The Minnesota county typographic map!
Following in the footsteps of its predecessor in Minneapolis, this poster gives each of Minnesota’s 87 counties the Typocartography treatment.
The letters in each county form its boundaries. Type is set in Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold.
If your walls would like one, proofs are available for order through the Noisome Misdeeds Mercantile. They’re fifteen bucks, 32” x 36”, and they ship the first of March.
(See if you can guess which county’s my favorite.)
Also, my apologies to the fine people of Cass County—there just weren’t two ways about it. My hope is that we can all be mature adults; let’s just get it all out of our system.
