Local Current: Thumbs Up

Backstory: For the past six months, I’ve been quietly working on a web-only radio station for MPLSSTPL—the local music and arts site I launched in 2008. That plan is now on the backburner, due to the launch of The Current’s “Local Current.”

Listen, I’m a big enough man to admit when I’m wrong. I wrote most of part one of this thing yesterday, and had intended to sum up the things I’d enjoyed about the local station’s debut, but after a few extra hours’ listening today, I heard some things I’d never heard before, some things I really liked, and in fact very little of the “measly” selection I complained about.

And pretty much as soon as I had a chance to do the Twitter thing with Andrea and Kyle (I hold few in higher esteem when it comes to local music scene in-touchery), and a half-dozen others, I was assured The Current is not half-assing this thing, and their plan is to not only build out Local Current’s catalog (surprisingly quickly, it would seem), but to use it as a sort of litmus for introducing more local acts to the rotation at the “mothership,” as Mr. Matteson so adequately put it.

After 24 hours on the air, it’s clear The Current aims to make its local offering more accessible and keep an open ear for recommendations.

Pretty much everything I complained about has either already been addressed or is in the process of being addressed. The better I knew they could do already appears to be quite underway — good.

Meanwhile, I’m not really sure what my plan is for the MPLSSTPL station. It’s still a ways from completion. She may show up one day down the line. In some form. We’ll see.
